Wilton Justice Group – Planting seeds
This is a great time to get planting, with increasing daylight and warming temperatures. Unfortunately, we cannot have our parish “Seed Sunday” this year, due to the Covid restrictions. But we still need to support our biodiversity, especially bees and other pollinators, while enjoying the therapeutic effects of planting and ‘growing our own’.
There are 98 species of wild bee, between bumblebees and solitary bees, but one third of them are threatened with extinction. They need good plants to provide their food pollen and nectar, such as heathers, hellebores, catmint, lavender, asters; herbs such as chives, rosemary and oregano, trees such as crab apple, rowan, whitethorn and many fruit bushes.
We still plan to hold a Harvest Festival in the autumn. And we invite you to send in photos of your successful planting, which we will display during the Festival. You can send in your photos together with your name and contacts to justice@sma.ie
A further thought: When you buy a packet of seeds it often contains more seeds than you need. So why not share or “seed swop” with your neighbours and friends?
